BIG READ of the “The Grapes Of Wrath” by John Steinbeck
North Louisiana was selected by the National Endowment for the Arts to receive significant grants to motivate people from 8th grade through adults to read “The Grapes of Wrath” - the quintessential story of the Great Depression – by Pulitzer prize winning author, John Steinbeck.  The BIG READ took place from October 1st through November 25th, 2010 in libraries, galleries, bookstores, schools, and community centers throughout North Louisiana.

Creation and Exhibition of New Works of Art:
Through a four month Professional Artists’ Residency, nationally and regionally renowned Artists created new works of Art to commemorate the impact of the Great Depression/New Deal Era in North Louisiana.  The new works were exhibited during “Triumph Over Tragedy” in locations across North Louisiana.

MONOPOLY Crash Bash – Tuesday, October 27th:
MONOPOLY was distributed by Parker Brothers/HASBRO in 1935 as a “cure” for the depression associated with the Great Depression.  The game was designed to help people imagine that they could become rich.  They could feel money in their hands; acquire property; and “stick it” to the Monopolies that had dictated their lifestyle. To commemorate the actual 80th “Black Tuesday” families, friends, and students across North Louisiana gathered across the 21 parishes to play Monopoly!

GREAT VIRTUAL SCAVENGER HUNT:
Anyone could Log onto the EYE 20 CREATIVE CORRIDOR Website beginning on Tuesday, October 27th to participate in the finale event – the Triumph Over Tragedy GREAT VIRTUAL SCAVENGER HUNT that used technology and “Hobo Symbols” to lead “virtual hunters” across North Louisiana to meet the “Elders,” discover the architectural sites, murals, and other icons of the Great Depression that impacted North Louisiana during that era.  The GREAT VIRTUAL SCAVENGER HUNT engaged thousands of people in North Louisiana and beyond in a “virtual hunt” to discover the people, places, and events that comprised the Great Depression/New Deal Era in North Louisiana.  This “virtual hunt” was web-based and included more than 700 questions that lead hunters through the artworks that had been created.   A $2,000 Grand Prize was awarded to the individual who answered the most questions correctly!

Art Exhibitions and Performances:
More than 150 Cultural Arts organizations in North Louisiana developed programs, theatrical, music, and dance performances, and arts exhibitions that encompassed the history, architecture, people and stories of the Great Depression / New Deal Era in North Louisiana.  These Exhibitions were “open” in a museum or cultural venue in a major city within the 21 parish region.  After the opening, they were transformed into smaller exhibits that traveled to library branches and other cultural venues.  The Masur Museum, Barnwell Center, Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, Meadows Museum, Biedenharn Museum and Gardens, Karpeles Manuscript Museum, Dorcheat Museum, Ouachita’s  Parish Children’s Museum, and artspace committed to produce an exhibition commemorating the lives and events of the Great Depression.
