I tell you, baby, it was … it was tough. Money disappeared out of this country. , we were working for 50 cents a day from sun to sun, just think about that out there, as hot as the sun can be. It meant black people had the power to praise and to seek God. It was real you know. You could hear them moaning and groaning in the field, and in the rows, and the cook behind the stove. Those old warriors back then, in the days I was raised in, they connected and God made a way out of no way. Somehow they’d go in the kitchen and God was in that kitchen and they’d burn some…scorch some flour and then they’d take and make a gravy and, girl, it would taste good. And they had some bread, some corn bread and it was good. That was the way we survived in those days.
