Math was difficult, the concept of numbers. There was a math teacher who was very strict and if you didn’t get the problem right at the board, you’d get a swat. But then there was a friend in that class, James Thomas, he and I got together and James would help me with my math. As a friend, he wasn’t swattin’ me if I got it wrong. Because of the business we had, I had to help in the café…. Funny thing with the math, that cash register, it dawned on me, the concept of making change. When an item cost 35 cents, I’d count it to the next 50 or 40 and then I went from there to the next 50 and made the change from a dollar. That just hit me one day, where before this concept of trying to figure it all out from taking the small amount from the big amount, it just wasn’t there. So that came to me like that one day.
